Sao Domingos – Brève Histoire
La mine de Sao Domingos (province de l'Alentejo-Bas, district de Beja) s'intègre dans une large bande piriteuse connue sous le nom de Faixa Piritosa Iberica (exploitée dès l'époque romaine). Le principal minerai existant à Sao Domingos est la pyrite cuprifère.
La redécouverte de la mine au cours du XIXe siècle s'inscrit dans un projet d'investissement minier promu par des capitalistes français. En novembre 1855, Ernest Deligny enregistre l'entreprise minière espagnole La Sabina (avec l'objectif d'explorer les mines portugaises). Il obtient en 1858 de l'Etat portugais la concession des mines de Sao Domingos, et la transfère à la Compagnie La Sabina.
A la fin de l'année 1858, la Compagnie loue la mine de Sao Domingos à un de ses membres, l'ingénieur britannique James Mason (la Compagnie Mason & Barry Limited exploite alors la mine jusqu'à son épuisement, en 1968). A cette date, la concession revient à l'entreprise La Sabina, jusqu'à sa suppression en 1984. Cette date marque le début du démentèlement de Sao Domingos.
Sao Domingos – Brief History
Sao Domingos mine (province of Alentjo, district of Beja) fits in a broard pyrite band known by the name Faixa Piritosa Iberica exploited since roman epoch. The main existing ore São Domingos is copper pyrite.
The rediscovery of the mine during the nineteenth century is part of a mining investment project promoted by French capitalists. In November 1855, Ernest Deligny registers the Spanish mining company( with the objective to explore the portugues mines). He obtained in 1858 from the Portuguese State the concession mine of Sao Domingos, and transfers it to the Company La Sabina.
At the end of the year 1858, the Company leases the mine Sao Domingos to one of its members, the British engineer James Mason (Mason & Barry Limited Company operates the mine until its depletion in 1968). To date, the franchise returns to Sabina now until its elimination in 1984. This date marks the beginning of Sao Domingos’s dismantling.
